Netflix iPad

I had been somewhat underwhelmed by the iPad after it was finally revealed.  However, after Netfilx just launched a free app for the iPad that allows you to stream movies and TV shows for no additional tax on your Netflix account . . . well, I think the iPad just found its niche in my home.

Mind = officially blown.

The full skinny is in the press release below.

Netflix Press Release

LOS GATOS, Calif., April 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) today announced that a free Netflix App for iPad is available on the App Store, allowing Netflix members to instantly watch an unlimited number of TV episodes and movies streamed from Netflix to iPad. Streaming to iPad is at no additional cost to Netflix members on plans starting at just $8.99 a month.

“The innovation and consumer appeal of iPad make it a perfect device for instantly watching TV episodes and movies streamed from Netflix,” said Reed Hastings, Netflix co-founder and chief executive officer. “We are excited to make a Netflix App available to iPad users beginning with the iPad launch.”

The Netflix iPad App for iPad will deliver a high-quality viewing experience, a broad array of movie and TV choices and a clean, intuitive interface. TV episodes and movies are conveniently organized into a variety of categories based on members’ personal preferences, popular genres, new arrivals and members’ individual instant Queues. Members can choose a movie or TV episode from any of the lists and just tap the Multi-Touch screen to play instantly or save the title to their individual instant Queue for viewing later. Additionally, users have the option of fast-forwarding and rewinding the video stream.

With 12.3 million U.S. subscribers at the end of 2009, Netflix is significantly expanding the ways in which its members can watch movies and TV episodes streamed directly to a range of devices such as the iPad. Netflix memberships starting as low as $8.99 a month allow members to instantly watch unlimited TV episodes and movies streamed to their TVs and computers and receive unlimited DVDs delivered quickly to their homes.

The Netflix App for iPad will be available for free from the App Store on iPad or at www.itunes.com/appstore/.

Streaming movies on the IPAD is a great idea, but I am having a problem with the movie freezing. My IPAD is fully charged and my internet MIFI device is fully charged. I move my internet device around for a better connection and it continues to freeze. What can be done to improve my viewing streaming from NetFlix?
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

2nd that – Netflix on my iPad is also freezing up. It is an utterly useless app in this condition. It would without a doubt be the best iPad app if it worked.

The app was going well for me then all of sudden froze up. It would take minutes to start back up and the resolution would be horrible. I have full WIFI and a high speed Internet. I’ve tried restarting the iPad, deleting and redownloading the app, but it still ends up freezing on me. W.t.f?

Yeah, surfing various boards this freezing issue is common and neither Netflix nor Apple are offering any solutions. Streaming media being one of the main reasons for purchasing a new device I’m rethinking this iPad decision and likely to dump it and go with a laptop.

Fixed it. Try this and see if it works.
16GB iPad 2, freezing every 90 seconds on Netflix streaming.
Double tap the square logo menu button on the edge. This brings up a menu of currently open apps at the bottom of your screen (likely all of them because who knew), tap and hold on any one of them. They will all start to shake and a red circle with a minus symbol will appear in the upper left hand corner.

If it’s a gray circle then you’re doing it wrong (this will offer to delete the app), so start over and read with greater care.

Close everything except Netflix. Be sure and scroll left and right, there are likely quite a few open apps.

Before taking the next step be sure you have your wifi password.

Now go to Settings. In the area labeled General, at the bottom of the screen is “Reset”. Open this, reset your wifi network. iPad will reboot, or whatever it does, and now you’ll have to go back into setting and reset your wifi password.

Settings will now be an open app, now that you know how close it but it doesn’t seem to matter. Likely all the open apps were a huge resource hog, but don’t quote me on this as I’m not an expert on iPads or how they manage resources.

Hopefully this works. Good luck.

Your fix made perfect sense since the first app I loaded was Netflix and it worked fine. Of course I started downloading other apps and was navigating to different apps when I noticed the Netflix freezing problem days later. You are the man.
Thanks for a easy fix.
