Apple Updates iMac and Mac Pro, Introduces Magic Trackpad and New 27-inch LED Cinema Display

Apple unleashed a barrage of updates today.  Most were expected, but the speedy 12-core Mac Pro has to be the headliner of the bunch.  Also in the mix are Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 processors for the iMac family.  A new Magic Trackpad and a 27″ LED Cinema Display round out the updates.

The Mac Pro base model now offers a single 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon W3530 processor, 3GB of 1066MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM and still keeps the $2499 base price.  The higher-end 8-core Mac Pro can be pimped to run two 2.93 GHz 6-core Intel Xeon X5670 processors for a total of 12-cores and is expandable to 32GB RAM, although the base 8-core model comes with 6GB RAM.  The 8-core Mac Pro will set you back at least $3500, but if you plan on springing for 12-cores, expect that price to sail north of $5000.  The new Mac Pro models will be available in August.

For mere mortals, the new iMac lineup offers some solid speed options as well, including up to a 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 processor in the 27″ model.  The base 21.5″ iMac sports an Intel Core i3 3.06GHz processor, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics w/ 256MB RAM and a 500GB hard drive.  It still comes in at the $1199 price tag too.

Even if you jump up to the 27″ iMac, which is configured with a 2.8GHz Core i5 processor, 1TB HD, 4GB RAM, and a 1GB ATI Radeo HD 5750 graphics card, you can still slide in just under $2000.

The Magic Trackpad is a new contraption that basically lets desktop users enjoy the multitouch trackpad that’s been packaged with the latest MacBook and MacBook Pro models.  This is definitely a try-before-you-buy item, as users are all over the map on love and hate relationships with these things.  Personally, I’m a bit of a fan of them.  Not sure if I want to shell out $69 for one though.  Apple also has a new battery charger to go along with it for $29.

Finally, Apple’s new 27-inch LED Cinema Display offers a 2560 x 1440 resolution and is priced at $999.  The new display features a Mini DisplayPort, built-in iSight camera, microphone, speakers, powered USB 2.0 3-port hub and a MagSafe connector.

And now you can also run all the Windows programs on the Mac using Parallels or Bootcamp software as a go-between. I am using Windows 7 on my iMac using Parallels and I didn’t even have to restart.
