Apple TV, iPod, iTunes, iOS and More Updates

by Eric on September 2, 2010

Earlier this week, Apple unleashed a barrage of updates, including a new Apple TV and revised iPod Touch models.

The new Apple TV is a fresh take the previous device, but this time Apple focuses on cloud content with support for streaming-only content that includes Netflix Watch Instantly.  The Apple TV runs $99 and offers HDMI and ethernet connections, as well as 802.11n wireless support.

Apple also updated the iPod Touch line, pretty much as expected.  The new models are essentially an iPhone 4 without the phone, with powerful features like the Apple Retina display, Apple A4 processor, gyroscope, 960 x 720 res still camera and 720p video capture.  Like the iPhone 4, the new iPod Touch can take advantage of the iMovie app and edit video from within the device.  An additional bonus is FaceTime support for true video chat just like the iPhone 4 with WiFi as well.

The most radical change to Apple products likely comes in the form of the Multitouch iPod Nano, which looks more like an iPod Shuffle but works much like the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Finally, Apple announced updates for iOS with the iPad getting iOS 4.2 and iPhone and iPod Touch getting iOS 4.1.  The iPad iOS 4.2 will be available in November and adds support for streaming music and video from iTunes with Airplay.  iOS 4.1 gives the iPhone and iPod Touch HDR photo support and Game Center support.

Show me any documentation to support your assertion that the ipod touch has a 5mp camera. All my research indicates that the ipod touch has a really poor quality still camera, though I’d love to be proven wrong.

Doh! You’re spot on. It’s only VGA-quality. My apologies for the slip up. Revising post now.
