Samsung Press Release

Ridgefield Park, NJ (September 2, 2010) – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, today unveiled its groundbreaking HMX-T10 camcorder. The full HD HMX-T10 features an innovative and pioneering 20-degree Slanted Lens that ensures that the user can truly enjoy their recording experience without any discomfort to their arm or wrist, a common occurrence in standard camcorders currently on the market.

The HMX-T10 is part of Samsung’s next-generation line up of compact digital camcorders that make it easier than ever for consumers to shoot and capture high-quality, full HD video. Small enough to carry anywhere and everywhere, the HMX-T10 provides unmatched portability and simplicity for capturing and editing video content on the move, without compromising on quality.

The HMX-T10 has a stylish finish and slim design to make it a camcorder to be proud of, while incorporating features for maximum fun and usability, such as a bright 2.7-inch touch screen LCD and the ability to capture still images and video footage at the same time. Additionally, due to its compact nature, the HMX-T10 can be carried with ease in any environment to capture those all-important movie moments – from a friend’s birthday party to that memorable family holiday at the beach.

“The HMX-T10 offers not only a stylish, compact design and fantastic recording quality at an affordable price, but also demonstrates the thoughtfulness and innovation Samsung brings to making movie and image capturing a truly enjoyable experience for everyone,” said Mr. SangJin Park, President of Samsung Digital Imaging Business, Samsung Electronics. “The HMX-T10’s convenient features, such as the 20-degree Slanted Lens, perfectly encapsulates the innovative and easy-to-use nature of our camcorder range, as well as our aim to remain at the cutting edge of innovation and design.”

Quality Recording Capabilities

The Canon XF105 and XF100 are a pair of compact camcorders that capture HD video using Canon’s XF MPEG-2 F:2:2 50 Mbps codec. Essentially, these are the junior versions of the XF300 and XF305 camcorders. The new camcorders feature a 10x zoom lens covering a 35mm equivalent range of 30.4mm to 304mm and are assisted by Canon’s SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer. Additional features include a 3.5″ 920k-dot resolution LCD that is fully articulating, along with dual XLR inputs.

The XF105 and XF100 have in-camera features for capturing HD 3D video when paired together. Additionally, both cameras offer an infrared low-light capability for shooting in complete darkness at HD resolutions. The XF105 and XF100 record to CF cards. The XF105 offers HD-SDI output and genlock in/SMPTE time code (in/out) terminals.

No word on price yet (I would guesstimate in the $3500+ range), but the Canon XF105 and XF100 should be available in first quarter 2011.

Canon Press Release

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., August 31, 2010 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announces the new Canon XF105 and XF100 Professional Camcorders for mobile HD video capture in a compact form factor. Canon’s smallest professional camcorders, the new XF105 and XF100 utilize the same Canon XF Codec featured in the Canon XF305 and XF300, introduced earlier this year. The Canon XF Codec is an MPEG-2 4:2:2 50Mbps codec used for exceptional high-definition image quality, full non-linear editing (NLE) systems compatibility and efficient, robust workflow. These camcorders include in-camera features enabling the easy set-up and capture of high-definition 3-D video when two XF105 or XF100 camcorders are paired, as well as Canon’s built-in infrared low-light feature enabling the capture of HD video in complete darkness. Both models record to Compact Flash (CF) cards and feature hot-swappable card slots for maximum performance. Differentiating the two models are industry-standard HD-SDI output and genlock in/SMPTE time code (in/out) terminals available on the Canon XF105. The XF105 and XF100 camcorders are ideal for Electronic News Gathering, documentary and independent filmmaking and event videography.

“Whether used as a companion to the XF305 or XF300, or as a stand-alone camcorder, the XF105 and XF100 are geared for a wide range of applications where high image quality, extreme portability and efficient workflow are of the utmost importance. And with true stereoscopic 3-D production and infrared recording capabilities, they allow users to expand into new markets,” stated Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A., “This week we will be exhibiting both the Canon XF105 and XF100 at Canon EXPO 2010 in New York and demonstrate the versatile low-cost capabilities.”

The Canon XF105 and XF100 Professional Camcorders feature a Genuine Canon 10x HD Zoom lens which provides the mobility and optical performance required by the most demanding professionals. Each model includes a Canon developed and designed native Full HD 1920 x 1080 CMOS image sensor and the new Canon XF Codec for extreme color detail required for accurate chroma-keying, color-grading and compositing for digital filmmaking. For finer transitions in tone and color, 4:2:2 color sampling offers twice the color resolution of HDV and other 4:2:0 formats. And to maximize compatability with existing industry infrastructure, video, audio and metadata are combined in an MXF (Material eXchange Format) File Wrapper, a widely supported open-source format. The Canon XF Codec is currently compatible with leading software programs widely used within the video production and broadcast industries including those available from Adobe, Apple, Avid, and Grass Valley.

To maximize the camcorders’ adaptability across various production environments, Canon has equipped each model with the ability to record at multiple bit rates, resolutions and variable frame rates for slow and fast motion.

Additional professional features include variable-interval (for time-lapse) and frame-record for stop-motion animation, and a photo feature for frame-grabs.

Genuine Canon 10x HD Zoom Lens

The Canon XF105 and XF100 Professional Camcorders feature a Genuine Canon 10x HD Zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent zoom range of 30.4mm – 304mm. For professional looking results, both models offer an eight-blade iris which yields natural, smooth background blur with reduced lens diffraction. The lens also features a SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) system featuring Dynamic and Powered IS modes for optimal performance in the greatest variety of situations.

DIGIC DV III Image Processor

The proprietary Canon DIGIC DV III Image Processor and Canon Full HD CMOS Image Sensor render native 1920 x 1080 HD video, capturing natural, lifelike colors with remarkable tonal gradations and detail. The DIGIC DV III Image Processor also powers Canon’s innovative Face Detection Technology, an autofocus option that can significantly reduce the effort required when camera operators work alone, such as in news gathering applications.

Compact, Comfortable Ergonomics and Operation

Weighing less than 3lbs, these models are designed to maximize comfort while shooting and enable fast on-the-go recording with both a top and side grip option. Each camcorder also features a convenient, freely rotating 3.5-inch, 920,000 dot LCD monitor and .24-inch 260,000 electronic viewfinder with approximately 100 percent field of coverage. The LCD monitor provides a display of the camcorders’ built-in waveform monitor to aid in achieving accurate exposure while shooting. Additionally, the LCD can show peaking, edge-monitor-focus and magnify the image, enabling users to confirm critical focus, an essential objective in all HD production.

Affordable 3-D Shooting

Canon offers built-in features to assist with 3-D production, including OIS Lens Shift to aid in optically aligning two XF105 or XF100 camcorders and a Focal length Guide for displaying the zoom position of each camera in relation to each other and calibrating the zoom distance. This adjustment can be done through the menu system while the camcorder is mounted to a rig or tripod. Once aligned, the amount of the angle-of-view change is displayed after zoom adjustment, preventing camera misalignment and simplifying adjustment.

Infrared Shooting

The Canon XF105 and XF100 include an infrared feature enabling the capture of HD video shooting in conditions with little to zero ambient light, which is ideal for Military and Law Enforcement markets, as well as Nature and Wildlife videographers. The XF105 and XF100 also feature an infrared emitter with a diffuser as well as a Green or White color option to shoot pleasing infrared imagery even in complete darkness.

Audio Flexibility

The Canon XF105 and XF100 Professional Camcorders feature dual XLR inputs for external audio sources as well as a built-in stereo microphone. The new camcorders support 16-bit PCM audio at 48 kHz with automatic and manual audio level adjustment.

Both the Canon XF105 and XF100 are scheduled to be available in the first quarter of 2011.

B&H Photo / Video has a great deal on the Canon VIXIA HF21 dual flash memory camcorder. Regularly listed for $899.00, the VIXIA HF21 is on sale through August 31, 2010 for $599.00 with free shipping.

Recently, I had the pleasure of extended hands on time with the Canon VIXIA HF M30 and the Canon VIXIA HF S21, which I loved. The VIXIA HF21 shares many of the same features of the two VIXIAs I reviewed; full 1080p HD CMOS sensor, dual flash memory, great still capture ability, NTSC recording format, mini HDMI output and a mini hotshoe. The main difference is that the VIXIA HF21 has real buttons rather than touch-screen buttons that the HF M30 and HF S21 have. This is not a bad thing though. It just mean there is less chance of getting finger prints on the screen. The HF21 is compatible with all SD and SDHC cards – but not SDXC cards.

The RED EPIC and Scarlet have been “on the radar” for about 2 years now. And even though we have no real clue as to when either camera will hit the market, the big RED One has proved good reason to pay attention to what RED is doing.

When a short video of the RED EPIC working the AF on a Canon 85mm f/1.2L lens surfaced on REDUser.net forums the other day, the chatter about these two monster cameras picked right back up. The reason that the Scarlet was in the mix, was because it was the one doing the actual shooting of the EPIC’s AF operation.

It’s nice to see both cameras working their stuff. Stay tuned for the latest on the Scarlet and EPIC.

Press Release

August 5, 2010

Chatsworth, CA, August 5, 2010 – SANYO North America Corporation (SANYO), introduces a new waterproof Full HD (1920 x 1080) Dual Camera Xacti, model VPC-CA102YL, for active lifestyles. The new Dual Camera can be used to record over 480 minutes of 1080 Full HD video on a single 64GB SDXC memory card and 14MP photos from a depth of ten feet underwater. The camera will be available for purchase in August with an MSRP of $349.99.

Designed for any indoor or outdoor adventure, the VPC-CA102YL fits perfectly in the palm of the user’s hand and is small enough to be carried in a pocket, backpack, or purse – ready to be used at any time and in any weather condition. SANYO Dual Cameras use a convenient video format, MPEG-4 AVC/H.264, which makes sharing videos online, on blogs or on other multimedia sites simple. The media created can also be easily edited and exported to portable media devices. Photos and videos can be displayed in Full HD resolution on high definition TVs.

“Dual Cameras are packed with features and offer incredible flexibility,” says Tom Van Voy, Vice President and General Manager of the Digital Solutions Division for SANYO North America. “This is the ‘take everywhere’ camera; water, snow, or land. Getting great HD video and still images is incredibly easy with the new CA102YL,” said Van Voy.

The camera uses a proprietary “double-range zoom” feature for zoom operation while filming video with 12x zoom available from wide angle to telephoto for capturing distant objects (equivalent to 40mm to 480 mm zoom in a 35mm film camera). In addition, the High-Speed Sequential Shooting mode enables capturing up to 22 photos at 7 frames per second.

The VPC-CA102YL is stylish and compact with a yellow, vertical-shaped body with gray accents. The new SANYO high-speed image processing engine contributes to the small size.

Files can be saved to SD, SDHC or ultra-high capacity SDXC (up to 2Tb) memory cards. Also, there are multiple video and photo modes for flexibility in memory use. The battery will allow approximately 60 minutes of continuous filming time in Full HD mode.

The Canon VIXIA HF-M30 is a dual flash memory camcorder with 8GB of internal memory and a SD/SDHC card slot for expansion capturing full HD 1920 x 1080 video in AVCHD format.

Key Features

Handling, Ergonomics and Control

The Canon VIXIA HF-M30 is a mid-level HD camcorder, slightly smaller and less expensive than the upper -level Canon VIXIA HF-S21, but with great video quality and it’s simple to use. The controls are well laid out and easy to use as on most modern camcorders with the exception of the zoom slider. I feel like I have to reach for the slider at times. Canon could have possibly positioned the slider where the photo button is. I realize the mini shoe probably forced Canon to push the zoom slider and photo button forward a bit, but this is a small quirk. The mini shoe is a welcome feature allowing for additional lighting, external microphone, wireless remote or a number of other great accessories. The touch screen controls are a breeze to use. I felt at no time like I was fumbling through the menus. Canon has one of the best touch-screen interfaces I’ve used. Changing from record to playback mode or video to photo mode is quick and thoughtless. I found myself doing such quite often because of the ease. For me the photo capture proved to be quite useful. Now, it won’t replace your DSLR or high-end point and shoot, but is quite good for quick snap shots.

Shooting with the Canon VIXIA HF-M30

The face-detection feature works very well on the VIXIA HF-M30. Transition while in motion on a person or panning a crowd is almost seamless as the camera picks out and stays locked on to the face of your subject person. The auto-focus is fast and precis and the image stabilization is among the best around. The VIXIA HF-M30 will soak up liberal amounts of shake and jitter. The stabilization is among the highest features of this camera and still probably my favorite. Now, the 8GB of internal storage will store up to 3 hours of video and if that is not enough, there is an SD card slot to pick up the slack. If maximum resolution is your game be sure to pick up some extra memory cards. 8GB doesn’t go very far when shooting at the highest quality setting. About 40 minutes of run time can be expected.

Hidden beneath the hand strap is a semi-soft cover protecting the camera’s output ports. There you’ll find the USB, HDMI and component outputs. While the camera includes a component cable you’ll need to pony up some extra cash for a HDMI cable. Sony makes one for about half price of the canon piece. Not that you need the HDMI cable. Video is just fine with the component output and unless plans are to show a lot of video direct to an HD TV from the camera an HDMI cable is really not necessary.

Video Quality

The HD quality is very good for a camera of this size, but instead of writing about how good it is the video below shows the quality. Note that this video was shot in the standard quality mode which is slightly less than full HD.

Here is an unedited straight from the camcorder sample still image as well.

Accessories

Canon BP-809B Battery – The Canon HF-M30 comes with one of these rechargeable lithium-ion batteries; however, if you’re going to be away from power for an extended period, you can pick up spares. The Pearstone BP-819 is a higher capacity batter that should supply close to double the run time.

Bescor LED-35DA Dimmable On-Camera Light – The LED-35DA works as a continuous video light source, or as a flash for still images shot with the HF-M30.

Canon SM-V1 5.1 Channel Surround Mic – The microphone features a shoe mount and accurately captures audio in all directions for accurate surround audio.

Canon ZR-1000 Zoom Remote – The ZR-1000 is a must if you need absolute zero motion from your VIXIA HF S21 while filming.

Canon LCD Hood – If you plan on spending significant time shooting in the harsh sunlight, an LCD hood can be a life saver in allowing you to get a better look at your scene.

Extra Memory – While the Canon HF-S21 comes equipped with 64GB internal memory, you may want the ability to expand that even further. I’ve used the basic Kingston SD cards in the HF-S21, which worked just fine. No need to go all out on fast memory cards with the HF-S21. You’ll just need to make sure you pick up SD cards that are Class 4 or higher in order to capture Full HD video. The HF-S21 is compatible with all SD and SDHC cards – but not SDXC cards.

Memory card reader – If you don’t own a memory card reader, they make transferring images to your computer a world faster. I highly recommend picking one up with the HF-S21. They’re cheap and big time saver. Lexar makes a good card reader for about $15.

Camera Bag – When making an investment into a high end camcorder make sure it is protected when in storage by keeping is zipped up in a quality storage bag.

Camera Case – If your going to be out and about for an extended period a compact case with shoulder strap is essential for carrying ease and protection.

Conclusion

The Canon VIXIA HF-M30 is a great little HD camcorder. There are a couple of small grips like the zoom slider position and the lack of an included HDMI cable, but all-in-all I have to say that I really enjoyed this camera and can definitely recommend it. If you are looking for an affordable HD camcorder take a close look at the Canon VIXIA HF-M30.

More details in the press release below.

Samsung HMX-E10 Press Release

Ridgefield Park, NJ (July 28, 2010) – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, today added to its point-and-shoot camcorder lineup with the introduction of the innovative HMX-E10. Offering full-HD resolution, the Samsung HMX-E10 is highlighted by a versatile, 270-degree swiveling lens that enhances consumers’ creativity and allows them to add their own unique views to their video by being able to record from just about any angle. The HMX-E10’s swiveling lens also brings a new sense of fun to recording video, and gives consumers the ability to step out from behind the camcorder and put themselves in the frame with their friends and family.

Samsung has also strived to simplify the way consumers share content with others through the HMX-E10, with the innovative built-in USB port function. The USB feature enables users to connect the camcorder directly to any computer without added attachments like a USB cable, allowing consumers to share important moments wherever they are. The USB connection can also be used to charge the battery.

“Samsung is focused on introducing features to its camcorders which address unmet needs and take the video recording experience to new levels for consumers,” said Sangjin Park, President of the Digital Imaging Business, Samsung Electronics. “The HMX-E10 offers the image quality, ultra-compact design and built-in USB technology that consumers expect from this class of camcorder, but goes a step beyond, offering features such as a swiveling lens, versatile LCD screen and a range of smart filters, which give users the ability to do more and express their creativity.”

Easy Connectivity and Sharing

Samsung designed the HMX-E10 to help simplify the way consumers share their content with others. The camcorder features a built-in USB connection that gives users the ability to connect the camcorder to any computer without having to worry about always carrying around a separate USB cable. In addition, the HMX-E10 is also loaded with Samsung’s play‑edit‑sharing program, called intelli‑studio. This intuitive program gives users the ability to edit and play their video from any computer without having to install supporting software. This is extremely useful when traveling or when consumers are away from the own personal computers.

An interactive and onscreen “upload” button on the HMX-E10 also makes uploading footage to the Web effortless. When connected to a computer with an internet connection, the one-touch “upload” button links directly to a specified content sharing Web site, such as YouTube™, and reduces the number of steps needed to successfully upload and share video.

High-Performance Sensor and Versatile Display

At the heart of the HMX-E10 is a large, high-performance 1/3.2 inch CMOS sensor that captures impressive 1920×1080 full HD resolution video (30p / H.264) as well as eight mega‑pixel digital still images. On the back of the camcorder is a versatile, 2.7-inch wide, touch‑screen LCD that is set vertically. When recording video, the HMX-E10’s LCD screen is divided into two sections; the top displays the live view showing what is currently in the frame and the bottom displays a series of touch-screen controls, including record, stop and play. Consumers can even rotate the swivel lens to utilize this screen to put themselves in the frame, allowing them to step out from behind the camcorder and become part of the action. When reviewing footage, consumers hold the HMX-E10 horizontally, so that they can leverage the entire display to view their video in widescreen.

Creative Controls

The HMX-E10 is packed with a full range of fun controls which encourage consumers to get creative with their videos. Consumers can take advantage of several Smart Filters which adjust the HMX-E10 to produce unique lens and color effects. The camcorder’s lens effects include miniature, which produces the tilt and lens shift effect, and vignetting, which produces the lomo effect. Color effects include defog, which mimics the use of a CPL filter, and sketch, which gives video a pencil drawing feel.

DXG unveiled a version of this little 3D pocket camcorder a while back and has now announced availability of the DVX-5D7 in August 2010.

The DVX-5D7 is said to support VGA resolution for 3D video and half HD for 2D video. The 3.2 inch display supports the parallax barrier method, eliminating the need for special glasses. Since the DVX-5D7 lenses are placed at a much narrower distance than the standard 6.5cm, 3D representation is said to be realized by image processing. The DVX-5D7 looks to have an HDMI port and support SDHC memory cards. With a purported 5MP sensor on board, I have to wonder about the image quality, since it is doing the work of two. The price seems to be undisclosed for now, but according to DXG a low price will be difficult because of high development costs. Also unclear is where to purchase.

Props to DXG for rolling to market a 3D capable pocket camcorder, though.
