Samsung HMX-Q10 Hands-On Review

by Joe on January 12, 2011

The Samsung HMX-Q10 is the first ambidextrous camcorder designed to be used right or left handed and captures 1920×1080 HD video at 60i.  The rounded design sits nice and comfortable in hand and feels identical in either hand and the simple no-nonsense design makes switching hands a breeze.  I know in my experience with camcorders there are times that being able to control the camera with my left hand is necessary and doing that with a conventional right handed camcorder is challenging to say the least and if you are left handed, well then the HMX-Q10 may be the camcorder you’ve been waiting on. Samsung is boasting about their new affordable HD camcorder the HMX-Q10 and maybe rightfully so.  It has a sleek design that is enhanced by the ability to use right or left handed.  Yes that is right a left handed camcorder that automatically changes the display orientation depending on which hand is holding it.

The design is simplistic with a large ergonomic record button and zoom toggle at the rear within easy reach of the thumb no matter which hand is holding the HMX-Q10.  Other functions are controlled via the 2.7 inch touch-screen interface.

Images are captured through a Schneider-Kreuznach Varioplan-HD F1.8 10x optical zoom lens with OIS and then proceesed through the 5MP BSI CMOS sensor displaying full HD video.  Granted it’s 60i, but considering the $299 price tag that’s not so bad.  Look for the HMX-Q10 to hit shelves next month. Zoom Q3HD Now Available

by Eric on December 1, 2010

Zoom’s much anticipated, Flip-like Q3HD camcorder is now available.  You can find it at B&H Photo here.

The Q3HD shoots 1080p at 30 fps or 720p at 30 and 60 fps.  The big news about the Q3HD, however, is the inclusion of the same mic capsules used on the H4n, along the the capture of 44.1/48/96kHz 16/24-bit WAV audio files.

Additionally, a mini plug line-in jack lets you capture audio from an external mic, and a mic gain switch lets you choose between low, high and auto.  You also get a visual reference for audio levels in the form of on-screen meters as you record/playback.  The presence of a line out mini plug suggests that you may very well be able to monitor audio as it is captured as well.

Sony has announced a firmware update for the NEX-VG10 camcorder that adds autofocus for Sony A-Mount SAM and SSM lenses.  The NEX-VG10 can accept Sony’s DSLR A-Mount lenses courtesy of the LA-EA1 adapter, which has previously required manual focus operation only.  However, this new firmware update will allow autofocus communication through the adapter.

The firmware update is available via Sony UK’s website.
