Introducing Windows 8

by Jay GotPassport on September 16, 2011

Windows 8, the successor to the Windows 7 operating system from Microsoft, was recently announced, and it’s getting a warm response from the tech bloggers.  Like Apple’s OS Lion, which tries to integrate some tablet-friendly features to a desktop, Windows 8 takes it a bit further.

Details, as well as a YouTube demo video, after the break:

Amazon Working on a Subscription model for Books

by Jay GotPassport on September 13, 2011

According to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon is working with publishers to provide a Netflix-like subscription service for Kindle books.   This is in the rumor stage, and it’s possible if this deal gets done, that it will be part of the Amazon Prime $79/year membership program, that includes free 2 day shipping on all purchases, as well as instant streaming video access to TV and movies; which will then include a selection of book titles.  The subscription model worked for music, will it work for e-books?  Let’s wait and see.

The marketing research company AYTM (Ask Your Target Market- not affiliated with the game’s parent company, Rovio), put out some statistics into the form of an infographic (who came up with that term “infographic” anyways…?).  You’ll see a variety of usage statistics, devices used, and behaviors regarding the Angry Birds game.  Oh, and the possible cures for this addiction.

See the ‘infographic’ after the break:

J.D. Power, you’ve heard of them, right?  The folks who hand out trophies for auto makers?  Well, as it turns out, they also do research about customer satisfaction regarding mobile phones as well (lucky us).   The phone makers who got the top marks should not surprise you, but the companies near the bottom of the list might.  I’ve included both charts (if you’re a true geek, you will actually read them and stay awake), as well as the full text of J.D. Power’s Press Release.

Nokia is currently running a crowdsourcing campaign for fresh remakes of their classic ringtone (you know the one..). The winning tune will be included with the standard set of ringtones that come with a selection of 2012 Nokia phones.  Looks like the grand prize will be $10,000 USD, with five runner up prizes of $1,000USD each.  Not bad.

Check out  the current entries, along with a cute video, after the break.

Video: Samsung “Pure Breeze” HomeScreen Organizer

by Jay GotPassport on September 6, 2011

You can download the app from the Android Market, a launcher/organizer made by the folks at Samsung.  Good to see hardware makers also be involved in the software side.  I assume the app works on other makes, not just Samsung phones, but check the app market to be sure.  Looks like a very straightforward, easy to use utility for organizing the apps on your Android phone.

For an Operating System that only has 6% of the market share,  it’s hard to believe that some forecast Windows Phones to become number two, or even number one, within a few years time.  Things change very quickly in the tech world in a short period of time, so I suppose anything is possible.  I just don’t see Apple’s iOS losing that much market share, given the iPhone’s popularity.

Here’s an excerpt from BGR.com:

According to research reports from Gartner and IDC, Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system will grab about 20% of the smartphone market by 2015, enough to propel the OS past Apple’s iOS platform to take the No. 2 spot globally. Research firm Gartner believes Android will have a 49% market share in 2015, followed by Windows Phone at 19.5%, and Apple’s iOS growth will slow so much that it will only maintain a 17% share. IDC believes Windows Phone will have a 20.3 percent share in 2015.

by Jay GotPassport on September 5, 2011

mock up from Gizmodo

Looks like the rumors about the Kindle Tablet are true.  MG Seigler of TechCrunch was the lucky guy who had a chance to actually handle the new device, and continue after the break to view a summary of the new tablet’s specs…

Android OS Is Top Target by Hackers

by Jay GotPassport on September 3, 2011

via McAfee

In this blog post by the New York Times, McAfee’s threat report including (amongst other info about hacker threats in general) statistics about Android OS being the most targeted mobile platform.  Android went from third, to first in the hacker target list.  That’s the double edged sword of using Android – one the one hand, you aren’t locked in like the Apple App Store to get your apps, but the downside is that apps are not vetted by Google, so they potentially could contain malware, which can be used to steal personal identifying information.

Are you using any steps on your Droid to prevent malware?  Share your tips here.
