We all know the drill: “Ok, what’s the printer’s name?” Which is promptly followed by: “It’s HP Laserjet *gibberish*” Then we print, and our document ends up somewhere on the other side of the building (if we’re lucky).
Of course, the solution many of us develop is to name the devices relative to the location (e.g., HP Laserjet North Hallway 2). But what if your computer simply knew which printer was closest – and gave that info to you?
It looks like Apple has that in its bag of tricks and we could see it on a Mac or iPad near you soon. [click to continue…]

With a MacBook Air refresh on the horizon for next month (likely alongside OS X Lion), it’s no surprise to see retailers like Best Buy out of stock of current models. [click to continue…]

Ever go on a run or for a bike ride and have to stop to dig through your iPod’s playlist? Well, it looks like Apple is aiming to keep your eyes on your exercise (or on the road if you’re driving) and out of your iPod’s menu system.
In a patent application published today, Apple revealed a directional audio interface for iPods. The gist of the technology is that it allows you go navigate your iPod’s library without digging through the menu. [click to continue…]

An Apple patent application shows off a more rugged hard drive enclosure, presumably for external hard drives or maybe a portable Time Capsule.
The ruggedness is achieved by angling a 3.5″ hard drive inside an enclosure and putting dampened wedges on each corner of the drive. Apple says this will increase the hard drive’s ability to take a fall and keep on running.

Apple’s getting serious with this iTV stuff. A recently published patent application reveals that Apple is developing technology using widgets that know what you are watching on TV and give you access to complementary content. [click to continue…]

A recently published US patent application from apple reveals a media device, along with its menu and content systems. What’s interesting though is that the application features several menu diagrams and even screenshots that utilize the name “iTV” as opposed to Apple TV (the current product).
Notably, the patent was filed in March of this year, so it looks like Apple is working with an entirely new product rather than just dealing with an old patent where they haven’t decided on a name for the current Apple TV yet. With the heavy rumors and predictions that we’ll see an actual TV from Apple later this year, it could be that Apple has been saving the iTV name just for that purpose.
Check out the patent for yourself in the PDF file, as well as additional shots of the interface, below. [click to continue…]

Consumer Reports, the consumer advocacy folks, recently ranked Apple’s MacBook line as the premier choice for any notebook category.
In the small category the 11-inch MacBook Air took the top spot with a score of 62 (of 100), while Gateway and HP took second and third with respective scores of 56 and 49. In the 13-inch category the MacBook Pro annihilated the competition sweeping the first five of seven areas, leaving the last two for Sony and Asus. The 15-inch category was a bit closer with the Pro finishing only 3 points in first place, but did sweep the first 3 scoring categories. The 17-inch category was another win for Apple with the Pro on top in the first areas categories.
Incidentally, I recently bought the 13-inch Pro model for myself and will be bringing a review (or at least my impressions) very soon. Stay tuned…
