CES is always packed full of a lot of crap and a lot of cool stuff. There’s always a couple of things that stick out on both ends of the spectrum.

Atop the “cool” category this year was Clixon’s VCC-400 Virtual Console Connection adapter. In short, VCC-400 works by plugging in a USB 2.0 adapter into one computer, then connecting a USB cable to the adapter on one end, and to another computer on the other end. Then, the mouse and keyboard from either computer can control the other.

It also works between Mac and PC. You can use the PC’s keyboard and mouse to control the Mac. When you move the mouse it will move between the two computer screens just like you do between two monitors on a single computer.

Better yet, you can drag and drop, or copy and paste, between computers. The drag and drop feature doesn’t work cross-platform (at least the demo didn’t); however, you can still copy and paste files and other clipboard contents between PC and Mac computers.

If ever the term “magic” were warranted to describe a product, this is it.

VCC supports 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows, Mac OS X 10.4-10.6 and Linux. The Clixon rep I spoke with said the software would probably retail for about $70. The downside? Clixon doesn’t have a US distributor for the device just yet.

As someone who uses multiple Macs and PCs on a daily basis (I have 2 keyboards and mice on my desktop), I would shell out $70 in a heartbeat for this product. So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that a US distributor gets on board with Clixon sooner rather than later.

Apple unleashed a barrage of updates today. Most were expected, but the speedy 12-core Mac Pro has to be the headliner of the bunch. Also in the mix are Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 processors for the iMac family. A new Magic Trackpad and a 27″ LED Cinema Display round out the updates.

The Mac Pro base model now offers a single 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon W3530 processor, 3GB of 1066MHz DDR3 ECC SDRAM and still keeps the $2499 base price. The higher-end 8-core Mac Pro can be pimped to run two 2.93 GHz 6-core Intel Xeon X5670 processors for a total of 12-cores and is expandable to 32GB RAM, although the base 8-core model comes with 6GB RAM. The 8-core Mac Pro will set you back at least $3500, but if you plan on springing for 12-cores, expect that price to sail north of $5000. The new Mac Pro models will be available in August.

For mere mortals, the new iMac lineup offers some solid speed options as well, including up to a 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 processor in the 27″ model. The base 21.5″ iMac sports an Intel Core i3 3.06GHz processor, 4GB RAM, ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics w/ 256MB RAM and a 500GB hard drive. It still comes in at the $1199 price tag too.

Even if you jump up to the 27″ iMac, which is configured with a 2.8GHz Core i5 processor, 1TB HD, 4GB RAM, and a 1GB ATI Radeo HD 5750 graphics card, you can still slide in just under $2000.

The Magic Trackpad is a new contraption that basically lets desktop users enjoy the multitouch trackpad that’s been packaged with the latest MacBook and MacBook Pro models. This is definitely a try-before-you-buy item, as users are all over the map on love and hate relationships with these things. Personally, I’m a bit of a fan of them. Not sure if I want to shell out $69 for one though. Apple also has a new battery charger to go along with it for $29.

Finally, Apple’s new 27-inch LED Cinema Display offers a 2560 x 1440 resolution and is priced at $999. The new display features a Mini DisplayPort, built-in iSight camera, microphone, speakers, powered USB 2.0 3-port hub and a MagSafe connector.

Apple 12 Core Mac Pro Press Release

CUPERTINO, California—July 27, 2010—Apple® today unveiled a new Mac® Pro line with up to 12 processing cores and up to 50 percent greater performance than the previous generation.* Featuring the latest quad-core and 6-core Intel Xeon processors, all-new ATI graphics and the option for up to four 512GB solid state drives (SSD), the new Mac Pro continues to deliver amazing performance and expandability for the most demanding consumers and professionals.

“The new Mac Pro is the most powerful and configurable Mac we’ve ever made,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. “With up to 12 cores, the new Mac Pro outperforms our previous top-of-the-line system by up to 50 percent, and with over a billion possible configurations, our customers can create exactly the system they want.”

At the heart of the new Mac Pro’s performance are next generation quad-core and 6-core Intel Xeon processors running at speeds up to 3.33 GHz. These multi-core processors use a single die design so each core can share up to 12MB L3 cache to improve efficiency while increasing processing speed. These systems feature an integrated memory controller for faster memory bandwidth and reduced memory latency; Turbo Boost to dynamically boost processor speeds up to 3.6 GHz; and Hyper-Threading to create up to 24 virtual cores. The Mac Pro now comes with the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics processor with 1GB of memory and customers can configure-to-order the even faster ATI Radeon HD 5870 with 1GB of memory.

For the first time, Mac Pro customers have the option to order a 512GB SSD for the ultimate in reliability and lightning fast performance. With the ability to install up to four SSD drives in the system’s internal drive bays, the new Mac Pro can provide ultra high-speed disk bandwidth and random disk performance, two times faster than the average performance of a standard disk drive.** Mac Pro also now features two Mini DisplayPorts and one dual-link DVI port. The additional Mini DisplayPort output allows customers to connect two LED Cinema Displays without an additional graphics card or adapter and the dual-link DVI port supports legacy DVI-based displays up to a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels.

Every Mac Pro comes with Apple’s innovative Magic Mouse and customers can also order Apple’s new Magic Trackpad as an option. The Magic Trackpad brings the intuitive Multi-Touch™ gestures of Mac notebook trackpads to the desktop. With its glass surface, the wireless Magic Trackpad allows users to scroll smoothly up and down a page with inertial scrolling, pinch to zoom in and out, rotate an image with their fingertips and swipe three fingers to flip through a collection of web pages or photos. The Magic Trackpad can be configured to support single button or two button commands and supports tap-to-click as well as a physical click. Magic Trackpad is available separately for $69.

Continuing Apple’s commitment to the environment, Apple’s desktop lineup is a leader in green design. The Mac Pro meets stringent Energy Star 5.0 requirements and achieves EPEAT Gold status.*** The Mac Pro enclosure is made of highly recyclable aluminum and the interior is designed to be more material-efficient. The Mac Pro uses PVC-free internal cables and components and contains no brominated flame retardants. The new Apple Battery Charger provides a convenient and environmentally friendly way to always have a fresh set of batteries for your Magic Trackpad, Magic Mouse and Wireless Keyboard. The Apple Battery Charger is available as an option for $29 and comes with six long shelf life rechargeable batteries.

Every Mac also comes with Mac OS® X Snow Leopard®, the world’s most advanced operating system, and iLife®, Apple’s innovative suite of applications for managing photos, making movies and creating and learning to play music. Snow Leopard builds on a decade of OS X innovation and success with hundreds of refinements, core technologies and out of the box support for Microsoft Exchange. iLife features iPhoto®, with breakthrough ways to organize and manage your photos by who appears in them and where they were taken; iMovie® with powerful easy-to-use features such as Precision Editor, video stabilization and advanced drag and drop; and GarageBand® which offers a whole new way to help you learn to play piano and guitar.

LaCie has dropped some new eSATA-equipped hard drives to its ‘Rugged’ line. The eSATA connector allows for transfer speeds up to 90MB/s. The only model currently available is a 500GB version, which runs $159.99 retail.

More details in the press release below.

LaCie Press Release

LaCie today announced the Rugged eSATA, the first mobile external hard drive on the market that features a Power eSATA interface. The Rugged eSATA offers major storage capacity and a cost advantage over eSATA SSD solutions, and is one of the only portable, bus-powered eSATA solutions on the market.

Bus-powered when connected to a USB-eSATA combo port, the LaCie Rugged eSATA combines superior transfer speeds of up to 90MB/s in a truly mobile form. The USB-eSATA combo interface, also known as Power eSATA, features a slightly different connector than eSATA and is frequently found on late-model laptops. The drive is also compatible with standard eSATA ports when the included USB power-sharing cable is connected.

“We are thrilled to integrate power eSATA technology into our best-selling Rugged mobile hard drive,” said Anne-Sophie Marchand, Consumer Product Manager. “This solution brings dazzling transfer speeds to customers on the go, while still ensuring compatibility with standard eSATA and USB 2.0 connectors.”

Housed in the award-winning Rugged casing designed by Neil Poulton, the LaCie Rugged eSATA features a unique scratch-resistant aluminum shell, internal anti-shock absorbers, and a shock-resistant rubber bumper to better protect files against everyday blunders.

Availability

The LaCie Rugged eSATA will be available in 500GB capacity through the LaCie Online Store, LaCie Reseller+ and LaCie Storage Partner starting at the suggested retail price of $159.99 (VAT included). For more information, visit www.lacie.com.

Turtle Beach Press Release

Elmsford, N.Y., 1/4/2010 – Turtle Beach, a pioneer in digital audio and gaming headphone technology, today announced the latest addition to its Audio Advantage product line, the Amigo II and Micro II USB audio adapters. Designed for Mac and PC, the Amigo II and Micro II are inexpensive, easy to use and deliver a rich audio experience in a package that’s about the size of a USB memory stick.

The Amigo II USB sound card adds a stereo output and mic input to a Mac or PC. Because it uses a USB digital connection, the Amigo isolates the audio signal from the noisy electronics inside a PC or laptop to provide higher-quality sound. The stereo output can be used for connecting powered speakers, headphones or an external recording device and the microphone input can be used for connecting an external microphone or the boom mic on a headset. This makes Amigo ideal for converting a standard analog headset into is USB headset for voice communications programs such as Ventrilo™ and Skype™.

The Micro II USB sound card adds a stereo line output and an optical digital audio output to a Mac or PC. The stereo output can be used for connecting powered speakers, headphones or an external recording device. The S/PDIF digital optical output connects a notebook or desktop PC to home theater systems, allowing pass through of 5.1 channel Dolby® Digital or DTS surround sound. This makes it ideal for enjoying DVD or streaming digital movies on your notebook while listening to immersive Dolby surround sound on your home theater system.

“The Amigo II and Micro II each offer significant benefits for PC and laptop users who want improved sound quality without a lot of hassle, at a price that’s hard to beat. They’re both incredibly simple to use. Just plug them into a USB port and you’re ready to go.” said Peter Ronick, Director of Marketing.

Both the Amigo II and Micro II work with Mac or Windows PCs without the need for external power adapters, special drivers or software. The devices will be available in January from major US retailers as well as the Turtle Beach web site at www.turtlebeach.com. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for each model is $24.95. Turtle Beach products are distributed in Europe by Mad Catz® Interactive, Inc. (AMEX/TSX: MCZ www.madcatz.com.)

Turtle Beach (www.turtlebeach.com) designs and markets high-quality audio peripherals for PC and video game platforms, including its growing line of Ear Force gaming headphones and headsets for XBOX, PS3™ and Nintendo® game consoles and for personal computer games. Turtle Beach, with headquarters in Elmsford, New York, is a brand of Voyetra Turtle Beach, Inc., which has been at the forefront of music and audio technology for more than three decades and is recognized as a pioneer of today’s PC audio industry.

Sadly, the CrunchPad is no more. There have been a lot of haters directing their spite toward either the product or Michael Arrington and, while I don’t agree with everything Arrington has to say, I was genuinely looking forward to this product.

As with many products and startups, fundamental differences in business partners’ ideas (and, perhaps a bit of greed) killed the CrunchPad.

Arrington’s full rundown on the death of the CrunchPad is here. John Biggs’ take is at CrunchGear. Even if you didn’t care for the CrunchPad, both accounts are an interesting look behind the scenes.
