CES 2012 is seeing a flood of new and updated products including Canon’s new line of VIXIA HD camcorders.  The new line includes three compact VIXIA HF M-series models, the HF M52, HF M50 and HF M500 as well as three entry-level VIXIA HF R-series, the HF R32, HF R30 and HF R300, which Canon says improvements to functions and features, like a newly designed HD CMOS Pro image sensor, have been made.  To help get your social media fix in, WiFi connectivity and DLNA compatibility has been stuffed in.

Video capture in MP4 is now an option and with the WiFi connectivity videos can be directly unloaded to YouTube and Facebook or mobile devices in a snap.

Also unveiled was Canon’s new PowerShot G1 X and PowerShot ELPH Digital Cameras.

Audio Scene Select: The Canon VIXIA HF M-series is equipped with a new Audio Scene Select menu that streamlines the selection of custom audio selection. Users select the environment that is being captured – a musical performance, a speech, a forest – and the camcorder will automatically adjust settings, including microphone directionality, frequency response, wind screen, volume level and microphone attenuator. While users will still be given the option to make these adjustments manually, the new audio settings menu makes the optimization of the audio levels quick and easy for casual users.

Export to External Hard Drive: Consumers are starting to use external storage devices more and more to supplement limited amounts of memory on laptops. Select models of Canon VIXIA camcorders allow a direct transfer of video content from the camcorder to an external storage device, a process which historically required a computer as a conduit. Data transfers from the VIXIA camcorder to an external hard drive are accomplished through an optional USB adapter.

Intelligent IS System: Canon has enhanced its Image Stabilization (IS) system, which automatically detects the needs of the situation being captured. The new Intelligent IS system will change intuitively through one of four IS modes – Dynamic, Powered, Macro and Tripod – so that the user has fewer things to worry about while shooting video. When the record button is pressed and the subject is walking, the Intelligent IS system will employ Dynamic stabilization to help reduce camera shake automatically. However, if the subject is detected to be very close to the camcorder, Macro (or Hybrid) stabilization will activate to counter shift camera shake; if the subject is far from the camcorder at extreme telephoto distances, Powered IS will activate to help counter slow, large-scale camcorder shake.

The 2012 VIXIA lineup retains many popular features that make it easy to record outstanding HD video, such as Canon’s Smart AUTO mode that intelligently detects and analyzes brightness, color, distance and movement to automatically select the best of 38 available pre-set setting selections for the scene being recorded. Canon’s Touch & Track feature allows users to select any subject on the Touch Panel LCD screen with their finger, which the camcorder will then track to ensure sharp focus and proper exposure. The new, official Facebook for iPad app is finally here, in the App Store.  For the iPhone, it’s a new version (4.0, and according to the app description, uninstall the older version before installing 4.0).

The first ever “Facebook” phone is the HTC Status, now available for pre-order via ATT.com.  According the ATT, the phone will be available on July 17th, for $49 with a 2 year contract.  What makes the phone different is the dedicated Facebook button you see on the lower right.

At the 2011 Mobile World Congress HTC has announced two new smartphones, the ChaCha (top) and the Salsa (left), which feature and integrate Facebook in almost every aspect.  Both phones feature dedicated Facebook buttons, bringing one touch access to the table.

The phones also incorporate intelligent Facebook features, such as giving the Facebook button the ability to alert you to networking opportunities.  An example is when a photo is taken the button may gently pulse to remind of the upload opportunity or when listening to the music you’ll get a little reminder to share what your listening to .

I must say the pulsing reminders would greatly annoy me, but if you are a true Facebook junkie and live in Europe or Asia the ChaCha and Salsa could be a must have.

HTC says both phone will run Android 2.4.  You read correctly.  Android 2.4! The ChaCha features a full QWERTY keyboard and a 2.6-inch, 480×320-pixel-resolution touch screen, while the Salsa utilizes a touch only design boasting a 3.4-inch, 480×320-pixel-resolution display.

There’s a lot of stuff on Facebook that I simply don’t understand.  However, one thing that I certainly know is that the new News Feed / Live Feed stinks.

I’ve seen tons of people post examples of how to get the “old Facebook” feed back.  The short of it is to move “Status Updates” to the default feed on your Facebook home page.

But, it’s not really the same.

You don’t get links, videos and picture updates.  I know some now tell people in their status that there is new content (like links, video and pics) on their wall because so many people have moved to the “Status Updates” as default.

If you want to get Status Updates, News Feed, Pics, Links, etc. in your default feed, here’s how.

1. On your Facebook “Home” page click the “more” link on your left sidebar.

2. At the bottom of the sidebar, click on “Create New List.”

3. Name the list “Everything” and select each of your contacts.

(If you have a lot of friends this could take a couple of minutes; however, you only have to do it once.)

4. Once you create your “Everything” feed, grab the three little striped bars to the right of the word “Everything” and drag it up to the top above “News Feed” or “Status Updates” (whatever is at the top of your sidebar).

5. Boom.  That’s it.  You’re done.

Now, everything is in your default news feed.  You’ll get updates on everything your friends are doing and won’t miss out on their silly pics, links and videos.

Future Friends

Unfortunately, your new friends won’t be automatically added to this “Everything” feed when you add them as friends.  To get them into your “Everything” feed, just click on the little pencil icon next to the word “Everything” and select the new friend (everyone else should already be selected).  Save the feed and all your friends, including new ones, should be good to go.

So I logged onto Xbox LIVE last night for a little Halo 3 multiplayer, and was surprised to see Facebook on my dashboard.

Sure enough though, Facebook made the official connection to Xbox LIVE yesterday. I haven’t had the chance to give it a full run through (and I’m not sure I really want to connect with all my Facebook friends on my Xbox), but it’s still one of those big steps in our ever-expanding social world.
