Sony dropped a couple of big bombs today on the portable gaming world. First, the long-awaited PSP2 (apparently, dubbed the NGP) was announced with a whopping 5-inch OLED touchscreen, dual analog sticks, front and rear cameras, and a touch panel on the back of the unit.
The NGP’s display sports a 960×544 resolution, which roasts the aging PSP’s 480×272 4.3-inch display. Additionally, the NGP features 3G, WiFi and GPS connectivity, along with accelerometer and gyroscrop motion sensing akin to the PlayStation Move. It’s also not going to use the PSP’s UMD media format, but Sony isn’t entirely clear just yet on what format you’ll be using to plug in games. The NGP won’t be available until the end of 2011, just in time for holiday shoppers.
The second big bomb is that the PlayStation Suite is coming to Android phones (Android 2.3 minimum req’d) this year, which will include support for emulated PSOne games in addition to newly developed titles designed specifically for the platform.
More details in the press releases below. [click to continue…]

If you’re serious about your iPhone and iPod Touch gaming, you might want to check out this new Helix grip from PosiMotion. This should help you out with those driving and flying games that use the accelerometer.
As you can see from the pics, you can mount your iPhone in a horizontal or vertical manner.

The Helix will be on display at CES 2010. It will set you back $19.99 and should be available in Spring 2010. You can pre-order one from PosiMotion already.

Man oh man, do I remember the Sega Genesis. I was a kid in the 80s who grew up with the Atari 7800 as my first gaming system, followed by several iterations of Nintendo systems.
But when the Sega Genesis came out, my mind was officially blown.
Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Ecco the Dolphin, Shinobi? Oh, man these were the cat’s meow back in the day.
I hadn’t heard of the Sega Genesis Firecore System until I saw a special offer on Buy.com today. Essentially, you can get all of these old games preloaded onto the system for $25. [click to continue…]

Geoff Keighly of Spike TV dropped the news on Twitter.
The world premiere of HALO: REACH happens only at the 2009 Video Game Awards, Live 12/12 on Spike.
That’ll probably get Spike some more viewers.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Halo back story, Reach is a Human planet where the Covenant (the alien bad guys) wiped out a huge part of our civilization by “glassing” the planet with their alien nukes. Hence the tagline: “Falls 2010.” It happened before the first Halo game.
There’s a great book (for those of us geek enough to read novels about Halo) called Halo: The Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund that tells the whole story. It’s a heck of a book, and I hope the game stays true to the storyline (or stays out of the direct plot of the book).
