The GoPro HD HERO is undoubtedly the leader when it comes to point-of-view video and the great thing about the GoPro video cameras is that they are affordable and easy to use.

GoPro has been around for a few years now and has set the bar high for perspective videography. So high in fact big time production companies are using these little cameras to get unique shots and yes they can handle the abuse avid sports junkies put them through. Just watch what Cameron Glendenning, Director of Photography, Deadliest Catch, has to say about shooting with the GoPro HD HERO.

GoPro is obviously the leader in self produced outdoor and extreme sports arena, but for good reason. The video quality is great and the equipment is tough-as-nails. Only limited by the imagination, GoPro video cameras work just about anywhere. From the water to the sky and everywhere in between.

Operation is generally simple involving installing a SD video card, start recording and be a hero. Once the footage has been acquired editing can easily be done with iMovie or Windows Movie Maker. The 170 degree wide angle lens gives awesome perspective and even includes the shooter in the shot, giving those cool, look-at-me videos we’ve all come to love from GoPro.

GoPro’s clear, impact resistant, waterproof case makes all the extreme video possible, protecting the small, light weight, quality camera inside. GoPro offers a good assortment of kits and accessories to capture whatever extreme video desired from scuba diving to sky diving and everything in between.

GoPro has a wide range of accessories and replacement parts, some of which are listed at the bottom of this post. There’s even a 3D kit available.

Panasonic has introduced their first 3D projector, the PT-AE7000U and judging from an impressive list of specs and initial reports, 3D home theater buffs will soon have, possibly, the most economical choice in the 3D projector pool.

Panasonic claims the AE7000U to be the world’s first 1080p 3D projector based on transmissive LCD panels driven at 480Hz (in 3D mode, each eye is shown 240Hz) using active-shutter glasses with an integrated IR transmitter. According to reports a higher driving frequency contributes to a significant reduction in crosstalk, a design goal for the AE7000U. Other goals were to increase the brightness and contrast using a higher-power, red-rich lamp; new LCD panels with greater aperture ratio and improved dynamic iris. The proof is in the pudding as they say with 2,000 lumens and a 300,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio. Another impressive tid-bit is the 2x zoom can cast a 120-inch diagonal image from as close as 3.6 meters (about 11 feet) to 7 meters (24 feet) from the screen.

Among the 3D features is a newly developed dual-core video processor that can be adjusted independently for the left and right images in a split-screen mode, along with the ability to adjust the depth of the 3D image, allowing viewing comfort for different screen size. A real-time 2D to 3D converter with selectable effect modes also keeps things interesting on plain old “flat” movies.

A cool feature brought back from previous models s the Intelligent Lens Memory that lets you store zoom and focus settings for 16:9 and 2.35:1 without the need for an anamorphic lens, and the projector can automatically select the right setting depending on the input signal. Additionally, SmoothScreen reduces the appearance of boundaries between pixels for sharper images.

The AE7000U is also very “green,” according to Panasonic, with intelligent power management system that reduces the lamp power to the exact required level of brightness depending on the content in display. More than 3 billion different image patterns are said to be analyzed to find the most efficient power output.

The PT-AE7000U is scheduled for a September release at a list price of $3,499.

Press Release

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Panasonic Solutions Company, provider of collaboration, information-sharing and decision-support solutions for government and commercial enterprises, today announced the PT-AE7000U, its first Full HD 3D home theater projector with 1080p (1,920 x 1,080 pixel) resolution. The PT-AE7000U is also the world’s first*1 3D projector to use transparent LCD panels driven at 480Hz that, combined with Panasonic’s original Overdrive Technology, realize significantly low crosstalk. Thanks to the newly-developed optical engine, which produces an incredible 300,000:1 contrast ratio and 2,000 lumens of brightness, the PT-AE7000U delivers both stunning 2D images and a comfortable and immersive 3D viewing experience at home.

“When we create our projectors, our goal is to produce images that mirror movie directors’ artistic vision and intent”

“When we create our projectors, our goal is to produce images that mirror movie directors’ artistic vision and intent,” said Art Rankin, director of Projectors and Higher Education Sector at Panasonic Solutions Company. “The PT-AE7000U’s key 3D projection technologies were developed in collaboration with Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory engineers who are heavily engaged in the authoring and mastering of 3D Blu-ray Discs™. They have taken key roles in establishing the industry standards for 3D and bringing the experience from large screens to homes. Through this joint effort, the PT-AE7000U has been redesigned from the ground up to achieve higher basic 2D performance and is packed with unique 3D features to deliver studio-grade 3D content to the consumer.”

The optical system of the PT-AE7000U features a new 200-Watt Red-Rich Lamp and new LCD panels with larger aperture ratio for increased red luminance and brightness output. The combination of fully-optimized Pure Contrast Plates, Pure Color Filter Pro and Dynamic Iris Pro has resulted in a 300,000:1 contrast ratio and 2,000 lumens of brightness. This produces brighter images with excellent coloring and deep blacks with fine shadow details.

The PT-AE7000U uses frame sequential technology for 3D image projection. The Overdrive Technology has been carefully tuned together with the 480Hz LCD Panel that greatly reduces 3D crosstalk, or double images, for comfortable 3D content viewing. The projector is also equipped with a newly-developed dual-core processing engine so that the projector can process 3D signals with all of the benefits of 2D image enhancements. Frame Creation, Detail Clarity Processor and other innovative image processing technologies are optimized for 3D images in the same manner as for 2D images. They bring out fine details and three dimensionality for natural, life-like visuals with excellent clarity, and create sharp, clear images of fast-moving scenes in sports and action movies.

Comfortable 3D viewing can also be adjusted with the 3D Viewing Monitor and the 3D Picture Balance features. Because the 3D effect changes with varying screen sizes, the 3D Viewing Monitor ensures that the viewer’s stereoscopic effect is within the safety zone set forth by the 3D Consortium Committee. The left and right eye images can be displayed side by side on the PT-AE7000U with the individual Waveform Monitor to adjust 3D picture balance.

Other 3D features include 2D-3D Conversion, which converts 2D content into 3D images for 3D projection with five different 3D effect modes.

The projector is equipped with a built-in 3D IR transmitter that lets the user enjoy large-screen 3D images with optional eyewear, which is sold separately. The models, TY-EW3D10U, TY-EW3D2LU, TY-EW3D2MU and TY-EW3D2SU, also used for the Panasonic VIERA 3DTV, are convenient for those looking to enjoy 3D content on both their Panasonic TVs and projectors. An optional IR transmitter (ET-TRM110) is available for extended transmission distance.

The PT-AE7000U comes rich with features for those looking to customize their home theaters. Many Blu-ray Discs and DVDs come in aspect ratios that are even wider than the projector’s 16:9 aspect ratio to match the image size (2.35:1) seen in movie theaters. The projector’s Intelligent Lens Memory feature makes it possible for the user to easily program up to six different zoom/focus positions. Automatic switching between 16:9 and 2.35:1 video content is also possible thanks to the signal aspect detection capability on the PT-AE7000U.

More theater automation, such as lighting and a motorized screen, is possible with the PT-AE7000U because it comes equipped with two programmable 12-volt trigger terminals and VIERA Link®. VIERA Link® provides seamless operation of multiple VIERA Link® compatible Panasonic devices by using the PT-AE7000U remote control with backlit buttons.

The PT-AE7000U is also equipped with three HDMI™ inputs (supporting x.v.Color™ and Deep Color), so multiple HD sources can be connected without an HDMI switcher. Initial setup and installation are quick and easy, because the 2x zoom can cast a 120-inch diagonal image from as close as 3.6 meters (about 11 feet) to 7 meters (24 feet) from the screen. The projector’s lens shift capability enables 100 percent vertical adjustment and 26 percent horizontal adjustment, so the user can suspend the projector either close to the ceiling or mount it to a wall.

In addition to its outstanding features, the new PT-AE7000U is also an eco-conscious product. Its intelligent power management system reduces the lamp power to the exact required level of brightness depending on the content being displayed. Advanced Panasonic digital circuitry intelligently determines the necessary power output by analyzing more than 3 billion different image patterns. This advanced analysis process reduces the main power consumption by as much as 10 percent when the Dynamic Iris function is operating, thus saving energy.

Other ecological considerations include an off-timer that reduces wasteful power consumption, an extremely low standby power consumption of 0.08 watts, and a 4,000 hour (normal mode)/5,000 hour (eco mode) lamp life.

The Panasonic PT-AE7000U Full HD 3D home theater projector is made in Japan and will be available in September 2011, through authorized Panasonic resellers, at an MSRP of $3,499.00.

Samsung has raised the curtain on its new compact camcorder, the W200. It’s a shock and waterproof design in a Flip-like form factor.

The W200 shoots full 1080p video at 30p and stores footage to a Micro SD/SDHC card. The image sensor is a 5MP backside illuminate CMOS sensor that also captures still images.

The W200 has a bright f/2.2 lens for better low light performance, although there is no optical zoom. It has a built-in USB connector for easily importing footage. Additionally, you get a built-in HDMI port in case you can’t quite wait to export the footage off of the camera to watch it.

The display is a pretty typical 2.3-inch 230K-dot resolution LCD panel. The W200 offers a couple of Smart Filters for adding instant effects to your video – vignetting and fisheye, both of which should be pretty self-explanatory.

The Samsung W200 should be available in May 2011 at an initial retail price of $159.
JVC GS-TD1 Press Release

03.07.2011– WAYNE, NJ－JVC today announced the availability of a new 3D consumer camcorder, the first on the consumer market that offers 3D video recording in Full High Definition. The new JVC GS-TD1 uses two camera lenses and two imaging sensors – one for each lens – to capture three-dimensional images in much same way that human eyes work.

3D video shot using the GS-TD1 can be viewed in 3D on any 3D TV. What’s more, the camcorder can shoot 3D video that can be burned to a Blu-ray disc or DVD-R for 3D playback on a compatible Blu-ray player.

“With more commercially-produced 3D content coming along this year, sales of 3D TVs are expected to be strong,” observed Dave Owen, Vice President, Consumer Video, JVC U.S.A. “But what could be better than creating your own home videos in 3D? We think there will be plenty of 3D TV buyers eager to do just that. Furthermore, we think they’ll appreciate that our new camcorder offers both Full HD 3D recording and several options for archiving and playing back their 3D footage.”

The JVC GS-TD1 features a pair of 3.32 megapixel CMOS sensors and a new JVC-developed high-speed imaging engine that processes the two Full HD images – left and right images at 1920 x 1080i resolution. Three shooting modes are offered, a key feature that provides several options for HD resolution and archiving of 3D footage. These three shooting modes are: a new “LR Independent” format (MP4 MVC) that records in Full HD, the widely used “Side-by-Side” format (960 x 1080 X 2) for AVCHD 3D recording, and 2D AVCHD shooting.

The camcorder uses a F1.2 JVC 3D Twin HD GT Lens that sets a new standard in high-resolution lenses, with extra-low-dispersion glass for crisp, high-contrast images, as well as multiple aspherical lenses for fine image reproduction. The combination of the fast F1.2 lens and the back-illuminated CMOS sensors provides the GS-TD1 with outstanding low light performance. The GS-TD1 also features round iris diaphragms that enable beautiful bokeh effect (background blurring) shooting of video and stills alike.

Additional highlights include 64GB of built-in flash memory, SDXC card slot, 3D optical 5x zoom, Optical Axis Automatic Stabilization System for disparity control to give depth to 3D images, JVC’s BIPHONIC technology for dynamic 3D sound and Automatic Parallax Adjustment to optimize the 3D-video comfort zone.

The GS-TD1 operates like other consumer JVC camcorders, with easy-to-use, intuitive controls. A 3.5” 3D touch panel LCD monitor displays 3D images without any need for 3D glasses, making it easy to check 3D images while shooting and watch 3D playback in the field.

The GS-TD1 comes with new Everio MediaBrowser 3D software (for Windows®) for full management, editing and sharing of content. In addition to full-fledged video and still image editing, files can be uploaded effortlessly to social media sites such as YouTube™ or Facebook, and the software allows 3D video to be shared on YouTube.

For archiving and playing back 3D recordings, there are several options depending on the shooting mode used.
•	Full HD 3D video, shot using the MP4 MVC mode, can be archived to a computer hard drive or Blu-ray disc drive. This Full HD material can be played back in 3D by running the footage back through the camcorder.
•	AVCHD 3D (Side-by-Side mode) video can be burned to a DVD-R disc and played back in 3D on any AVCHD-compatible Blu-ray player – including non-3D AVCHD-compatible Blu-ray players – when the disc was created with a PC or JVC Share Station.

The JVC GZ-TD1 Full HD 3D camcorder is available now for $1,699.95.

More details in the press release below.

Sony Press Release

LAS VEGAS (CES BOOTH #14200), Jan. 5, 2011 – Sony today unveiled a lineup of feature-packed Handycam® camcorders that redefine the way consumers capture video and photos, including its first foray into the consumer world of 3D. Sony is the only company that can deliver motion pictures and live action sports in 3D – and then provide a similar experience to consumers at home or on-the-go.

Significant technological advancements enhance the new camcorder portfolio, yielding innovative devices that offer unique digital imaging solutions. In addition to a Full HD 3D Handycam consumer camcorder with a glasses-free built-in 3D LCD, a built-in video projector model and a video enthusiast consumer model highlight Sony’s camcorder lineup.

“This year’s lineup really breaks the mold of what conventional camcorders can do,” said Andy Bubala, director of the camcorder business at Sony Electronics. “Adding to Sony’s comprehensive line of 3D solutions, our Handycam products answer consumer needs as well as create new demand, setting Sony apart from the competition.”

Handycam Headliners: Full HD 3D, Projection, Film-Like Production

Creating a new standard in video creation and playback, three new additions bring 3D technology, a video projector and enthusiast solutions to Sony’s industry-leading high definition lineup.

Sony’s HDR-TD10 is the world’s first “Double Full HD” 3D consumer camcorder. The camcorder employs an integrated dual lens system, which includes two of each key component – double Sony G Lenses, double “Exmor R” CMOS image sensors, and double BIONZ® image processors.

The dual recording system allows 3D content to be recorded in 1920×1080 Full HD resolution and viewed with 3D active glasses on 3D-capable HDTVs or in Full HD 2D on non-3D displays. All 3D footage can also be played back without glasses on the camcorder’s 3.5-inch Xtra Fine LCD™ 3D touch screen. In addition to other innovative features, 10x optical zoom with Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization with Active Mode and iAUTO are offered in 3D mode. Providing 64GB of flash memory, the HDR-TD10 will be available in April for about $1500.

Sony’s new Handycam camcorders with a built-in video projector offer the ultimate playback experience, even on the go. A compact, LED-based projector is built into the 3-inch flip-out LCD panel, maintaining the camcorder’s compact size, and allows video and images to be projected at up to 60 inches (diagonally; when projected 18ft. away) onto walls, ceilings, or other flat surfaces. Stereo speakers with Clear Phase™ and S-Master™ digital amplifiers produce clear, dynamic sound and when combined with the integrated projector, provide a whole new way to enjoy video playback without needing to plug into an HDTV. The HDR-PJ50V with a 220GB Hard Disk Drive will be available in April for about $1000, while the HDR-PJ30V with 32GB of flash memory and HDR-PJ10 with 16GB of flash memory will be available in March for about $950 and $700, respectively.

Sony also introduced the video enthusiast-level consumer camcorder, HDR-CX700V, with hallmark Handycam features – “Exmor R” CMOS image sensor, Wide Angle Sony G Lens, Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization with Active Mode, Highlight Share, iAUTO – and new technologies like 60p/24p recording, PMB portable (compatible with Mac in April), built-in USB cable, Tracking Focus, and Event Browse for automatic grouping of your content by events for easy playback.

Borrowed from Sony’s professional products, the camera boasts film-like shooting with 24p native recording, along with advanced features such as CinemaTone Gamma and CinemaTone Color presets, Expanded Focus, Zebra and Peaking settings for more precise video expressions. Additionally, a newly developed 16:9 “Exmor R” CMOS sensor realizes a wide angle of up to 26.3mm (35mm equivalent) and higher megapixels for video and photos. With 96GB of flash memory, the HDR-CX700V will be available in March for about $1300.

Advanced Optics & Intelligent Features

With sleek designs and best-in-class features such as its high-speed BIONZ® imaging processor, Sony’s camcorder family offers unparalleled performance. Across the entire lineup, the following technologies will be integrated:

• iAUTO for automatic selection of optimal camcorder settings in different environments by detecting the camcorder’s surroundings and continually optimizing settings in real-time for a variety of unique scenes

• Extended Zoom for longer zooming capability, in addition to Optical zoom

• Direct Copy to create your own video library on external Hard Disk Drive without a PC

• Built-in USB cable and software for easy web upload and quick charge (except HDR-TD10)

• Large 3-inch LCD display for easy viewing and touch operation (HDR-TD10 has a 3.5 inch LCD)

• Auto lens cover & power-on just by opening the LCD

• Optical SteadyShot™ image stabilization with Active Mode in HD models and SteadyShot with Active Mode in SD models, reducing the effects of hand shake for dramatically smoother video footage even while walking

Sony continues to offer superior engineering in its HD models, even at entry level. In addition to the above, all new HD Handycam models will feature the back-illuminated “Exmor R” CMOS sensor for stunning low light performance, Golf Shot for a rendering of your swing in up to 22 images, Wide Angle Sony G Lens (26.3mm for HDR-CX700V/560V; 29.8mm for the rest of HD models), and 60p recording, in addition to capturing content in full 1920 x 1080 high-definition video recording at up to 24Mbps, the highest bit-rate offered by the AVCHD™ format. All HD Handycam camcorders will also be equipped with new features like Event Browse for automatic grouping of contents by events, Highlight Playback & Share for simple highlight reels, and Tracking Focus, which maintains focus of moving objects. Similar to Face Touch, where you can select a person in the frame to be prioritized, you can touch a subject in the shot, such as a dog or vehicle.

A vital part of good video is optimal sound, and with deep roots in audio innovation, Sony brings exceptional sound to more of its camcorder models. Now many Handycam camcorders will be equipped with a high quality built-in microphone with 5.1ch surround system, stereo speakers with Clear Phase and S-Master technology, wind noise reduction, and a mic/headphone jack.

The Samsung MemoryCAM HMX-U20 is a stylish piece finished in a nice shinny black, silver, blue or red case with a slightly curved form that fits the hand nicely. Not only does the MemoryCAM shoot 1080 HD video, it can manage 7.8MP still images also. The MemoryCAM also comes with a nice thick nylon wrist strap with adjuster.

Operating the Samsung MemoryCAM is super easy. There is a single start/stop video button and a separate button for still video capture. A center toggle switch operate the zoom. There is a 3x optical zoom on board and if that is not enough there is an extra 10x digital zoom. The LCD is bright and easy to see as long as there is not direct sunlight. I had to view the screen at somewhat odd angles, when in bright sunlight, in order to even get an idea of what was on screen. While I am on my soapbox I want to mention that there is not a built-in light for dark conditions. Samsung really needs to reconsider the decision to omit a light. A couple of things that I like about the Samsung is the presence of real buttons and no touch screen capability. Real buttons give feedback, which just makes for better camera operation, no matter the camera.

Samsung has included an A/V out put port as well as a mini HDMI output. An HDMI cable is not included. A nice feature is being able to charge the MemoryCAM with A/C power or USB power. Accessing the USB plug and other ports can be a little challenging. While the port covers are sleek and good looking, removing the covers is a little difficult.

The bottom cover hides the lithium ion battery and SD memory card. I wished more the once that the output port cover was as easy to open.

Accessories

Extra Memory: I’ve used the basic Kingston SD cards in the MemoryCAM, which worked just fine. No need to go all out on fast memory cards. You’ll just need to make sure you pick up SD cards that are Class 4 or higher in order to capture Full HD video. The Samsung MemoryCAM HMX-U20 is compatible with all SD and SDHC cards – but not SDXC cards.

Extra Battery: When you are out and about an extra battery is a good idea so no action gets missed. Samsung has a reasonably priced battery or for a few dollars less Pearstone has a suitable battery. Pearstone also has a standalone AC/DC battery charger that could come in handy.

Case: The first negative impression I received upon opening the MemoryCAM was the lack of a case or pouch. An inexpensive case is good insurance when carrying a camera of any kind when not in use.

On-Camera Light: I mentioned earlier that an on-camera light would be a welcome addition, but until Samsung steps up a CameraBright LED light that screw into the tripod mount would serve well.

Conclusion

All-in-all I really like the Samsung MemoryCAM HMX-U20. There are a few annoyances that need some work by Samsung, but for the price, the video quality is quite good and the camera is easy to operate. I really like the 3x optical zoom and the zoom toggle switch.

Samsung MemoryCAM HMX-U20 at B&H Photo/Video $179.00 $149.00 through 10/2/2010

The Canon XF105 and XF100 are a pair of compact camcorders that capture HD video using Canon’s XF MPEG-2 F:2:2 50 Mbps codec. Essentially, these are the junior versions of the XF300 and XF305 camcorders. The new camcorders feature a 10x zoom lens covering a 35mm equivalent range of 30.4mm to 304mm and are assisted by Canon’s SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer. Additional features include a 3.5″ 920k-dot resolution LCD that is fully articulating, along with dual XLR inputs.

The XF105 and XF100 have in-camera features for capturing HD 3D video when paired together. Additionally, both cameras offer an infrared low-light capability for shooting in complete darkness at HD resolutions. The XF105 and XF100 record to CF cards. The XF105 offers HD-SDI output and genlock in/SMPTE time code (in/out) terminals.

No word on price yet (I would guesstimate in the $3500+ range), but the Canon XF105 and XF100 should be available in first quarter 2011.

Canon Press Release

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., August 31, 2010 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announces the new Canon XF105 and XF100 Professional Camcorders for mobile HD video capture in a compact form factor. Canon’s smallest professional camcorders, the new XF105 and XF100 utilize the same Canon XF Codec featured in the Canon XF305 and XF300, introduced earlier this year. The Canon XF Codec is an MPEG-2 4:2:2 50Mbps codec used for exceptional high-definition image quality, full non-linear editing (NLE) systems compatibility and efficient, robust workflow. These camcorders include in-camera features enabling the easy set-up and capture of high-definition 3-D video when two XF105 or XF100 camcorders are paired, as well as Canon’s built-in infrared low-light feature enabling the capture of HD video in complete darkness. Both models record to Compact Flash (CF) cards and feature hot-swappable card slots for maximum performance. Differentiating the two models are industry-standard HD-SDI output and genlock in/SMPTE time code (in/out) terminals available on the Canon XF105. The XF105 and XF100 camcorders are ideal for Electronic News Gathering, documentary and independent filmmaking and event videography.

“Whether used as a companion to the XF305 or XF300, or as a stand-alone camcorder, the XF105 and XF100 are geared for a wide range of applications where high image quality, extreme portability and efficient workflow are of the utmost importance. And with true stereoscopic 3-D production and infrared recording capabilities, they allow users to expand into new markets,” stated Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A., “This week we will be exhibiting both the Canon XF105 and XF100 at Canon EXPO 2010 in New York and demonstrate the versatile low-cost capabilities.”

The Canon XF105 and XF100 Professional Camcorders feature a Genuine Canon 10x HD Zoom lens which provides the mobility and optical performance required by the most demanding professionals. Each model includes a Canon developed and designed native Full HD 1920 x 1080 CMOS image sensor and the new Canon XF Codec for extreme color detail required for accurate chroma-keying, color-grading and compositing for digital filmmaking. For finer transitions in tone and color, 4:2:2 color sampling offers twice the color resolution of HDV and other 4:2:0 formats. And to maximize compatability with existing industry infrastructure, video, audio and metadata are combined in an MXF (Material eXchange Format) File Wrapper, a widely supported open-source format. The Canon XF Codec is currently compatible with leading software programs widely used within the video production and broadcast industries including those available from Adobe, Apple, Avid, and Grass Valley.

To maximize the camcorders’ adaptability across various production environments, Canon has equipped each model with the ability to record at multiple bit rates, resolutions and variable frame rates for slow and fast motion.

Additional professional features include variable-interval (for time-lapse) and frame-record for stop-motion animation, and a photo feature for frame-grabs.

Genuine Canon 10x HD Zoom Lens

The Canon XF105 and XF100 Professional Camcorders feature a Genuine Canon 10x HD Zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent zoom range of 30.4mm – 304mm. For professional looking results, both models offer an eight-blade iris which yields natural, smooth background blur with reduced lens diffraction. The lens also features a SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) system featuring Dynamic and Powered IS modes for optimal performance in the greatest variety of situations.

DIGIC DV III Image Processor

The proprietary Canon DIGIC DV III Image Processor and Canon Full HD CMOS Image Sensor render native 1920 x 1080 HD video, capturing natural, lifelike colors with remarkable tonal gradations and detail. The DIGIC DV III Image Processor also powers Canon’s innovative Face Detection Technology, an autofocus option that can significantly reduce the effort required when camera operators work alone, such as in news gathering applications.

Compact, Comfortable Ergonomics and Operation

Weighing less than 3lbs, these models are designed to maximize comfort while shooting and enable fast on-the-go recording with both a top and side grip option. Each camcorder also features a convenient, freely rotating 3.5-inch, 920,000 dot LCD monitor and .24-inch 260,000 electronic viewfinder with approximately 100 percent field of coverage. The LCD monitor provides a display of the camcorders’ built-in waveform monitor to aid in achieving accurate exposure while shooting. Additionally, the LCD can show peaking, edge-monitor-focus and magnify the image, enabling users to confirm critical focus, an essential objective in all HD production.

Affordable 3-D Shooting

Canon offers built-in features to assist with 3-D production, including OIS Lens Shift to aid in optically aligning two XF105 or XF100 camcorders and a Focal length Guide for displaying the zoom position of each camera in relation to each other and calibrating the zoom distance. This adjustment can be done through the menu system while the camcorder is mounted to a rig or tripod. Once aligned, the amount of the angle-of-view change is displayed after zoom adjustment, preventing camera misalignment and simplifying adjustment.

Infrared Shooting

The Canon XF105 and XF100 include an infrared feature enabling the capture of HD video shooting in conditions with little to zero ambient light, which is ideal for Military and Law Enforcement markets, as well as Nature and Wildlife videographers. The XF105 and XF100 also feature an infrared emitter with a diffuser as well as a Green or White color option to shoot pleasing infrared imagery even in complete darkness.

Audio Flexibility

The Canon XF105 and XF100 Professional Camcorders feature dual XLR inputs for external audio sources as well as a built-in stereo microphone. The new camcorders support 16-bit PCM audio at 48 kHz with automatic and manual audio level adjustment.

Both the Canon XF105 and XF100 are scheduled to be available in the first quarter of 2011.

Handling, Ergonomics and Control

The Canon VIXIA HF-M30 is a mid-level HD camcorder, slightly smaller and less expensive than the upper -level Canon VIXIA HF-S21, but with great video quality and it’s simple to use. The controls are well laid out and easy to use as on most modern camcorders with the exception of the zoom slider. I feel like I have to reach for the slider at times. Canon could have possibly positioned the slider where the photo button is. I realize the mini shoe probably forced Canon to push the zoom slider and photo button forward a bit, but this is a small quirk. The mini shoe is a welcome feature allowing for additional lighting, external microphone, wireless remote or a number of other great accessories. The touch screen controls are a breeze to use. I felt at no time like I was fumbling through the menus. Canon has one of the best touch-screen interfaces I’ve used. Changing from record to playback mode or video to photo mode is quick and thoughtless. I found myself doing such quite often because of the ease. For me the photo capture proved to be quite useful. Now, it won’t replace your DSLR or high-end point and shoot, but is quite good for quick snap shots.

Shooting with the Canon VIXIA HF-M30

The face-detection feature works very well on the VIXIA HF-M30. Transition while in motion on a person or panning a crowd is almost seamless as the camera picks out and stays locked on to the face of your subject person. The auto-focus is fast and precis and the image stabilization is among the best around. The VIXIA HF-M30 will soak up liberal amounts of shake and jitter. The stabilization is among the highest features of this camera and still probably my favorite. Now, the 8GB of internal storage will store up to 3 hours of video and if that is not enough, there is an SD card slot to pick up the slack. If maximum resolution is your game be sure to pick up some extra memory cards. 8GB doesn’t go very far when shooting at the highest quality setting. About 40 minutes of run time can be expected.

Hidden beneath the hand strap is a semi-soft cover protecting the camera’s output ports. There you’ll find the USB, HDMI and component outputs. While the camera includes a component cable you’ll need to pony up some extra cash for a HDMI cable. Sony makes one for about half price of the canon piece. Not that you need the HDMI cable. Video is just fine with the component output and unless plans are to show a lot of video direct to an HD TV from the camera an HDMI cable is really not necessary.

Video Quality

The HD quality is very good for a camera of this size, but instead of writing about how good it is the video below shows the quality. Note that this video was shot in the standard quality mode which is slightly less than full HD.

Extra Memory – While the Canon HF-S21 comes equipped with 64GB internal memory, you may want the ability to expand that even further. I’ve used the basic Kingston SD cards in the HF-S21, which worked just fine. No need to go all out on fast memory cards with the HF-S21. You’ll just need to make sure you pick up SD cards that are Class 4 or higher in order to capture Full HD video. The HF-S21 is compatible with all SD and SDHC cards – but not SDXC cards.

Memory card reader – If you don’t own a memory card reader, they make transferring images to your computer a world faster. I highly recommend picking one up with the HF-S21. They’re cheap and big time saver. Lexar makes a good card reader for about $15.

Conclusion

The Canon VIXIA HF-M30 is a great little HD camcorder. There are a couple of small grips like the zoom slider position and the lack of an included HDMI cable, but all-in-all I have to say that I really enjoyed this camera and can definitely recommend it. If you are looking for an affordable HD camcorder take a close look at the Canon VIXIA HF-M30.
