In Jobs’ own words:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

The Apple board followed Jobs’ requests and recommendations, naming him as Chairman of the Board and appointing Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

While Apple’s stock is expected to take a bit of a nose dive on this news tomorrow, I suspect that upcoming iPhone and iPad announcements will bring a rebound as investor confidence builds on strong sales for Apple in the upcoming holiday season.

iPhone 5 Rumormill Cites 4-inch Display

by Eric on February 15, 2011

Looks like the next iPhone may come with a bigger display.  According to DigiTimes, component suppliers for Apple are working off specs for a 4-inch display that will find its way into the iPhone 5.

The new iPhone will presumably launch in Summer 2011 with who-knows-what under the hood.  For the time being though, it appears that the hood will be 4-inches.

Verizon iPhone Hands-On

by Joe on February 10, 2011

After years of waiting the iPhone finally functions on Verizon’s CDMA network.  Just over four years after the original iPhone launch people now have a choice of carriers for the iPhone 4.  The area I live in is quite rural and since the launch of the iPhone folks like me could only dream of owning  one, since AT&T has absolutely no coverage here… I don’t mean weak… I mean none, zilch, nada.

So, the big question.  Was it worth the wait?  There are many good phones available now like Blackberry and phones that run the Android platforms.  Well after getting my hands on the iPhone 4, I have to say it is best phone Verizon offers in my opinion.  Web surfing is faster than Blackberry, dropped calls are a thing of the past (at least at this early stage) and no matter how I gripped the phone I could not get the signal meter to drop off.   The signal strength was weaker than full strength in a location that I would have expected full bars, however even with just one bar calling has not been a problem.  The iPhone 4 is very “green” also, so the environment can benefit as well.  I am not sure 4 years was worth it since there are so many great phones in the market.  Apple could have really capitalized on the entire smart phone market early on, but it’s nice to at least have the iPhone option anyway.

If you have a Verizon iPhone 4 let us know about your experience in the comments.

Orbitix Sphero Hands-On

by Joe on January 8, 2011

I got my hands on the little Orbitix Sphero for a few minutes and if you like remote control toys and have an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch this is a really cool toy for the home, office or just about anywhere.  Using the iPhone to control the Sphero is quite easy.  Basically, using a finger or thumb to control the interface on the Apple device is all there is to it and off it goes via Bluetooth.  There is a boost button also to give a burst of speed when needed.
