HDSLR Audio: Shotgun Mic Shootout

When I started taking a seriously look at working more with video, the last thing on my mind was audio.  I learned quickly that capturing quality audio is critical to a good video segment.

Zoom Q3HD Compact Camcorder

Zoom, maker of the popular H4n and H1 audio recorders, has launched the Q3HD pocket-sized camcorder.  The Q3HD shoots 1080p at 30 fps or 720p at 30 and 60 fps.

The big news about the Q3HD, however, is the inclusion of the same mic capsules used on the H4n, along the the capture of 44.1/48/96kHz 16/24-bit WAV audio files.  Additionally, a mini plug line-in jack lets you capture audio from an external mic, and a mic gain switch lets you choose between low, high and auto.  You also get a visual reference for audio levels in the form of on-screen meters as you record/playback.  The presence of a line out mini plug suggests that you may very well be able to monitor audio as it is captured as well.

The Q3HD records to SD and SDHC memory cards for up to 7 hours 720p capture time with a 32GB card, and is powered by 2 AA batteries.  It will set you back $299 and should be available this Fall.  Check availability on Amazon.com.
