So much for that brilliant idea

Apparently, the move to spin off Netflix’s DVD rental business into a separate business was too much for shareholders to stomach.  In a blog post on the company’s official blog today, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said Netflix was not moving forward with its previous plan to separate the DVD rental and streaming business.  The comment section of that blog post got nasty pretty quick, with numerous customers calling for Reed Hastings’ head.

Netflix

Reed Hastings just stirred the Netflix pot a lot more.  After the recent price increase for streaming and DVD rentals, Hastings apologized in a blog post on the official Netflix blog.  Then, he let loose that the price increase was further cemented by splitting the DVD rental portion of Netflix into a separate company, which will go by the name Qwikster. Netflix Watch Instantly

In an official blog post today, Michael Spiegelman, Director of Product Management at Netflix said they were fixing some of the scrolling jitters in the horizontal scrolling functionality and that they’ll be bringing back sortable lists.

That’s one step in the right direction; however, I miss the old version of the website that worked like, you know, a website.  This set-top box design has no place in my browser.

While I’m at it, can we get the ability to create and manage our own lists back? That was a lame move taking those away Netflix.

Amazon has flipped the switch to make over 5,000 movies and TV shows available for free instant streaming to paying Amazon Prime subscribers, which runs $79.99 per year (and will remain the same price).  The titles are rather duplicitous over what existing Netflix subscribers get; however, if you are a paying Amazon Prime subscriber, you can’t argue with free. I Just Ordered My Netflix Wii Disc

by Eric on April 13, 2010

Netflix Wii Disc

After I receive a disc from Netflix to enable instant streaming on the Wii, I should probably be a bit ashamed at the number of devices on which I can watch Netflix.  In addition to my PC, I can stream Netflix content to my Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii.  Like that is even remotely necessary.  How spoiled are we?

That sad part is that I’m usually working on my PC and don’t want to stream video on it while doing so – and, as a result, I have nowhere to watch Netflix in my office since my G5 iMac isn’t supported by Netflix instant streaming.  Perhaps I should move my Xbox 360 into the office?  Yes, that seems like a productive move.

Netflix Instant Streaming for iPad

by Eric on April 2, 2010

Netflix iPad

I had been somewhat underwhelmed by the iPad after it was finally revealed.  However, after Netfilx just launched a free app for the iPad that allows you to stream movies and TV shows for no additional tax on your Netflix account . . . well, I think the iPad just found its niche in my home.

Mind = officially blown.

The full skinny is in the press release below. [click to continue…]

Redbox

Redbox and Warner Bros. just inked a deal that will result in WB providing DVD and Blu-ray titles to Redbox . . . 28 days after they are released.

See, WB doesn’t want people to rent DVDs for $1 the day they are released.  Instead, WB wants consumers to buy the discs for $20+.  As a result, the only sure thing that comes from this deal is that consumers will have to wait longer to watch new movies, or pony up and line WB’s pockets a little more.

Way to go Redbox.

See the press release with all the puffery below. [click to continue…]
