Now that we’ve seen the new iPhone 4S, which was not an earth shattering reveal, perhaps it’s time for Samsung to wow us finicky folks in the smart phone geekdom.  The next super Droid phone, dubbed the “Nexus Prime,” is rumored to be announced at the Samsung event on October 11th, and the potential wow factors will be it’s curved screen, and the latest Android OS, “Ice Cream Sandwich.”  Enjoy the sneak peek video, and click below for a brief story by CNET, while I go get an ice cream sandwich.  Damn that power of suggestion!

Video: Samsung “Pure Breeze” HomeScreen Organizer

by Jay GotPassport on September 6, 2011

You can download the app from the Android Market, a launcher/organizer made by the folks at Samsung.  Good to see hardware makers also be involved in the software side.  I assume the app works on other makes, not just Samsung phones, but check the app market to be sure.  Looks like a very straightforward, easy to use utility for organizing the apps on your Android phone.

Samsung recently announced a new 5.3 inch screen smart phone/tablet, called the Samsung Note.  It’s a crossover product that blurs the line between a phone and a tablet.   One of the most unique features of the Note is the “S Pen” interface that takes advantage of the included stylus (remember those thingies, Palm Pilot/Pocket PC fans?).  As an educator, I see great potential with the S Pen, as it would make an e-text more useful as students can jot down notes and highlight, circle text much easier than with an e-reader or other non-stylus enabled tablet.

But, as a phone, is it just too big?  Should Samsung have gone after the Kindle 6 inch sized tablet segment, and just not make it a phone?  The folks at Engadget tossed it around and reported it was surprisingly light for its size…

What are your first impressions?

Samsung is now mass producing 22 inch black and white and color transparent displays sporting a 1,680 by 1,050-pixel resolution and a 500:1 contrast ratio.  The panel utilizes available ambient light, such as sunlight, or indoor lighting allowing 90 percent less  power consumption than conventional backlit LCD displays.

For now it seems that Samsung will be targeting  the digital signage arena, such as store windows, but look for transparent display technology elsewhere in the future, like maybe the automotive industry.  The display supports HDMI and USB.

Press Release

SEOUL, Korea – March 31, 2011 – Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. announced today that it began mass production of the 22-inch transparent LCD panel in March this year.

The panels come in two colors, the black-and-white type and the color type, and they have a contrast ratio of 500:1 with WSXGA+(1680*1050) resolution.

Compared with the conventional LCD panels that use back light unit (BLU) and have 5% transparency, Samsung’s transparent LCD panel boasts the world’s best transparency rate of over 20% for the black-and-white type and over 15% for the color type.

The transparent LCD panel has a high transparency rate, which enables a person to look right through the panel like glass, and it consumes 90% less electricity compared with a conventional LCD panel using back light unit.

It’s because a transparent LCD panel utilizes ambient light such as sun light, which consequently reduces the dependency on electricity for generating power.

Also, Samsung’s transparent LCD panel maximizes convenience for not only manufacturers but also consumers by incorporating the High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) and the Universal Serial Bus (USB) interface.

Transparent display panels have endless possibilities as an advertising tool, which can be applied to show windows and outdoor billboards or used in showcase events.

Corporations and schools can also adopt the panel as an interactive communication device, which enables information to be displayed more effectively.

Younghwan Park, a senior vice president of Samsung Electronics LCD Business, said, “Transparent displays will have a wide range of use in all industry areas as an efficient tool for delivering information and communication. With the world’s first mass production of the transparent LCD panel, Samsung Electronics plans to lead the global transparent LCD market by developing various applications.”

Samsung HMX-Q10 Hands-On Review

by Joe on January 12, 2011

The Samsung HMX-Q10 is the first ambidextrous camcorder designed to be used right or left handed and captures 1920×1080 HD video at 60i.  The rounded design sits nice and comfortable in hand and feels identical in either hand and the simple no-nonsense design makes switching hands a breeze.  I know in my experience with camcorders there are times that being able to control the camera with my left hand is necessary and doing that with a conventional right handed camcorder is challenging to say the least and if you are left handed, well then the HMX-Q10 may be the camcorder you’ve been waiting on. Samsung LED TV’s Unvieled At CES

by Joe on January 6, 2011

Samsung unveiled their new line of LED TVs at CES 2011.  In all there are more than 40 new televisions ranging from 19 inches to 65 inches and Samsung preview a monster 75 inch LED TV.  The new lineup brings of course HD and not only 2D, but several are 3D capable and from what I was earlier on Wednesday, I have to say that I am impressed.  Something I can’t say about some of Samsung’s earlier sets.

Streaming content is on the rise and in fact will be among the biggest trends this year and Samsung is on the bandwagon.  Many of the new TV’s are web connected with integrated apps.

The first thing that jumped at me was the ultra-thin bezel.  Samsung says they were able to make a 80% reduction in the bezel mass to make the edging nearly invisible.

The D8000 series TV comes with Samsungs new active shutter 3D glasses.  For more images and the press release hit the jump. [click to continue…]

Samsung is boasting about their new affordable HD camcorder the HMX-Q10 and maybe rightfully so.  It has a sleek design that is enhanced by the ability to use right or left handed.  Yes that is right a left handed camcorder that automatically changes the display orientation depending on which hand is holding it.

The design is simplistic with a large ergonomic record button and zoom toggle at the rear within easy reach of the thumb no matter which hand is holding the HMX-Q10.  Other functions are controlled via the 2.7 inch touch-screen interface.

Images are captured through a Schneider-Kreuznach Varioplan-HD F1.8 10x optical zoom lens with OIS and then proceesed through the 5MP BSI CMOS sensor displaying full HD video.  Granted it’s 60i, but considering the $299 price tag that’s not so bad.  Look for the HMX-Q10 to hit shelves next month.
